Artist Statement
As an intermedia artist and art educator, my mission is to make art accessible through individual and collaborative generation, as well as out-of-the-box education. Aesthetically, I am captivated by color, pattern and the space between reality and abstraction. Conceptually, I am fascinated with weaving together themes of family, dreaming, and the subconscious. I work these themes into paintings, installations, and digital art. I am inspired by Byzantine and Gothic art motifs, as well as by Cubism and Surrealism. I am also captivated by the surrealist environments developed by artists like Gustav Klimt, Neo Rauch, Wangechi Mutu and Titus Kaphar. I blend these sources of inspiration into my own style of motif-based alegorical art with surrealist themes.
While I work with traditional media, I also have a love for digital media as a means to create collaborative and interactive installations. I enjoy collaborating with artists and programmers that share a similar interest in the tangible manifestation of intangible concepts. I thrive when working with students, as I love to push preconceived notions about what art is and can be. My entire body of work centres around process over product and concept over technique. While I am able to discuss and think about art from an academic perspective, my creative expertise lies in making such discussion and thought accessible to everyone inside and out of the art world.
